the following is an article we were required to read for my anthropology class =D .. after reading, scroll down to the bottom of the blog entry.. DO NOT SCROLL DOWN TO THE END OF THE BLOG ENTRY UNTIL YOU FINISH THE ARTICLE.. otherwise, you just suck xD
in case you haven't caught on, Nacirema is backwards for American and if you read carefully, you'll see that the article is actually about Americans xD ..
"Notgnishaw", for example, is backwards for Washington -- referring to George Washington presumably
the "box" or "chest" refers to a medicine cabinet
"medicine men" refers to doctors
"but decide what the ingredients should be and then write them down in an ancient and secret language" -- refers to doctor's prescriptions and their ugly writing (what a stereotype xD ..)
"holy mouth men" = dentists
"hog hairs" = floss xD
"women bake their heads in small ovens for about an hour" -- refers to when women would have their hair done under those things that gush out steam to condition the hair xD
"latispo" is backwards for ospital, obviously referring to hospital
"permanent group of vestal maidens who move sedately about the temple chambers in distinctive costume and headdress" -- refers to nurses xD
"magically treated needles" = injections xD
"listener" = psychiatrist
"other rites are used to make women’s breasts large if they are small, and smaller if they are large" = breast implants / breast reduction xD
and there are tons more symbolisms in there xD
i'll admit though that i didn't catch on nung una xD galing kc how it's written e xD .. such that you wouldn't really think about it that much xD .. and i thought that since it's an anthro class, baka meron nga tlgang ganun na tao xD .. i found out na lang in class na it's referring to americans pla xD .. tpos i read it again and everything just dawned on me xD
